The Double-Pearl and other diluted coat colours are neither a trend nor a novelty. They are part of the genetic and cultural heritage of the Spanish horse, with deep roots in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Pearl dilution gene (Prl) originates from Iberian lineage and has never been identified as a naturally occurring gene in Northern European or Asian breeds. During Spanish colonial expansion, this gene travelled to the Americas, becoming part of the genetic foundation of the Mustang and, later, the Quarter Horse.
The renowned stallion Barlink Macho Man, of the American Paint Horse breed and carrier of the so-called Barlink Factor (Pearl), stands as a direct example of this Iberian genetic legacy.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Spanish horse was widely represented in royal and noble portraiture as a symbol of nobility, power, and distinction. Artists such as Velázquez and Rubens contributed to establishing the Iberian horse as an emblem of royal prestige, while Francisco de Goya provides a rare and compelling visual record of a golden-coated Iberian horse, demonstrating that such colours did indeed exist during this period.
By the late 19th century, the Yeguada Militar redirected PRE breeding toward grey and bay coats to standardise cavalry mounts. Over time, grey came to be perceived as the 'true' Spanish horse, while diluted coats were progressively marginalised.
Today, recognising the Double-Pearl and other diluted coats means restoring an essential part of the Iberian horse’s genetic and cultural heritage. The Spanish horse is not defined by a single colour, but by the harmony of its diversity.
